FMGE Exam 2026: A Broad Outline

Conducted twice a year by the National Board of Examination (NBE), the FMGE is a screening exam, mandatory for all foreign medical graduates who wish to pursue their post-graduation or establish their medical practice in India.

  • Number of papers: 2 Parts (Part 1 & Part 2)
  • Exam pattern: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) format
  • Total Marks: 300
  • Duration: 5 hours

FMGE 2026: The Exam Pattern

·         The FMGE is a computer-based exam, comprising 300 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) of 1 mark each.

·         Two papers comprising 150 questions each are conducted with the total exam duration being 5 hours, i.e., each paper is 2.5 hours long.

·         Both papers are conducted in English, and there is no negative marking.

Breaking Down the FMGE 2026 Syllabus

The FMGE syllabus is vast and encompasses a huge range of topics from different subjects. These topics are broadly categorized into three groups, namely:

·        pre-clinical topics

·        para-clinical topics and

·        clinical topics

Among these three categories, the clinical topics hold the maximum weightage and must be covered thoroughly.

1.     Clinical subjects: 200 marks

Clinical subjects like Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics and Gynecology, form the major portion of the FMGE paper. Below, we list the most important/high-yield topics against each subject.

  • Medicine: Medicine carries the highest weightage. Topics like cardiovascular and neurological disorders hold the maximum value.
  • General surgery: Topics like trauma management, particularly that of head, chest and abdomen, surgical techniques, and post-operative care are essential. FMGE questions are mostly clinical scenario-based or case-based and inquire about infections, wound healing, burns, and shock.
  • Systemic Surgery: Topics from gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic surgery, such as choledocholithiasis, pancreatitis, and peptic ulcer disease; topics from endocrinology, such as thyroid carcinomas and Pheochromocytoma; and topics from pediatric and oncology surgery must be revised thoroughly.
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology: Pregnancy-related conditions, complications, and delivery procedures are frequently tested.
  • Community Medicine: Biostatistics, Demography, Vaccinations and National Health Programmes

Besides these, subjects such as community medicine, pediatrics, ophthalmology, and otorhinolaryngology also carry considerable marks and require thorough preparation.

2.     Pre-clinical and para-clinical subjects: 100 marks

The pre-clinical and para-clinical subjects carry less weightage, as compared to the clinical subjects. But their revision in the last month is essential because these subjects are concept-based and therefore, provide the foundational and conceptual knowledge that you need to boost your scores.

  • Anatomy and Physiology: The foundation of medicine, these two subjects form the core of any medical exam. An FMGE aspirant must be well-versed in human anatomy and physiology.
  • Biochemistry: A thorough understanding of this first-year subject ensures concept clarity and helps you excel in the FMGE.
  • Pathology, microbiology, and pharmacology: These are the subjects that develop your clinical. For acing the FMGE 2026, focus on disease mechanisms and transmission, microorganisms and their growth, and drug therapies.

3.     Forensic medicine: In terms of the weightage in the FMGE 2026, this subject is low-key. However, some topics particularly medico legal topics are important and might be asked.

Tips for the Final Month FMGE Preparation

1.     Focus on Important Subjects: A student needs to narrow down his/her focus to the most important subjects in the final month. At this time, prioritize subjects like anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and medicine as they are always scoring.

2.     Revise high-yield topics: Having narrowed down to just the important subjects, it is easier to now focus on the high-yield topics from each one of these subjects. This ensures not just efficiency in your preparation but also maximizes your scores in the FMGE exam.

3.     Timed MCQ Drills: For every medical graduate aspiring to crack the FMGE 2026, practicing the MCQs is a must. Solving as many MCQs as possible in a given time length improves your speed.

4.     Building Concept Clarity: While speed at attempting the MCQs is important, an FMGE aspirant must also work on clearing his/her basic concepts because FMGE is only a screening test. The NEET PG is yet to come.

5.     Mock tests and PYQs: Attempting the previous years’ question papers and mock tests is the best last month strategy to follow. FMGE Solutions, 10th edition, features all the previous years’ FMGE exam papers (2014-2026).  Solving PYQs acquaints you with the exam patterns and the frequently asked questions. At the same time, it can help you assess your progress and identify the weak areas that need addressing in the final month.

Opting for preparatory books that offer a blend of MCQs and concept-building helps. One of the best books for FMGE preparation is FMGE Solutions, 10th Edition, authored by Dr Deepak Marwah and Dr Siraj Ahmad. With over 10,000 questions, this book also provides its readers with detailed subject-wise and topic-wise explanations of the basic concepts to enhance conceptual understanding.

6. Planning the Last-Month Revision: Set weekly targets for yourself. Decide the chapters to be revised in a given week. At the beginning of the week, sketch out your daily schedule with micro-targets set for each day. Every day in the morning, list out the targets of the day, and make sure you have achieved them by the end of the day. A structured approach ensures complete syllabus coverage.

7.  Maintain optimum health: While the stress is soaring high at this time, you must be mindful of your health. Getting sound sleep of at least 6 hours, staying hydrated, eating healthy, and taking frequent short breaks during study sessions helps you stay fresh. At the same time, maintaining good ergonomics, such as the right chair and table for a good posture and positioning of the study area in a well-lit and ventilated room helps enhance the overall productivity.
