Nita Bahl joined the Division of Mycology and Plant Pathology at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute after completing her education. She received her M.Sc. degree with the best academic record from the University of Rajasthan in 1959 and later completed postgraduate studies at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. She qualified the CA examination in New Delhi in 1970, securing a gold medal in Plant Pathology.
She worked for more than two decades on various aspects of mushroom cultivation and crop protection and served as the principal investigator of the divisional research project titled “Researches on Mushroom Cultivation.” She has a large number of research papers and popular articles to her credit.
She was a member of the Executive Council of the Mushroom Society of India and participated in numerous conferences and symposia across the country. She actively contributed to training programmes for farmers and enthusiastic growers by providing technical guidance, demonstrations, and production support through SMS and extension activities.
She also assisted the NCERT in developing a programme on mushroom cultivation to be introduced at the high-school level, which helped create awareness of this important field among students.
Her hard work and dedication were recognized with the prestigious Women Achiever Award in 1995 in international recognition of her pioneering work in mushroom cultivation, development, and consultancy.
