The Limit state design being the latest, very extensive presentation of the method applied to fully and partially prestressed concrete structures is made. An introduction to the probability failure analysis leading to the limit state concepts is illustrated along with some statistics of observations. Full and partial prestress designs based on the latest codes of practice are explained with a number of examples on variety of elements, such as beams, ties, columns, slabs, shells and bridges. Detailed design examples on minimum weight design of beams is presented to enable the students and designers to look for rational solutions. Cost analysis of components of materials and formwork in beams is illustrated.

Pasala Dayaratnam

Pasala Dayaratnam, PhD (1962) Dr. Pasala Dayaratnam earned his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder, USA, in 1962. After a brief tenure with the Andhra Pradesh PWD and teaching at Andhra University, Waltair, he joined IIT Kanpur in 1965. Over a distinguished academic career spanning nearly 30 years, he taught a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, guided numerous research scholars, and supervised several sponsored research projects. He has served as a consultant in the design of complex industrial structures, tall buildings, towers, bridges, and shell structures. As a member of various Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Committees, he has contributed to the development of several structural engineering codes of practice. Dr. Dayaratnam has shown keen interest in innovative teaching methodologies, evaluation procedures, and testing techniques. He has authored nine textbooks in structural engineering, published 110 research papers, and prepared approximately 150 technical reports on design, testing, and evaluation. A recipient of multiple academic awards throughout his student career—from high school to PhD level—he has also received recognition for several of his research publications.
