Modern medical science is growing leaps and bounds The volume of information available is huge. A thorough understanding of normal functions of living being provides a firm foundation to appreciate the altered function resulting in disease. Knowledge of the structure becomes an essential prerequisite to understand the functions better. Keeping in mind the close association between the structure and functions we have tried to integrate Anatomy and Physiology in the first part of this book. Medical professionals are faced with challenges of handling infected persons and material as part of their practice of medicine. They face the threat of dealing with infections which do not have a satisfactory cure. There is also an urgent need to contain the spread of infection if possible prevent it. We have added a section on Microbiology to give an insight to this important aspect of patient management. Model questions are provided at the end of each chapter to review the topic.

Dr. D. Venkatesh is a renowned Professor of Medical Education at Ramaiah Medical College, Bengaluru, where he has served for several years.
