Praful Desai
Praful Desai, MS, FRCS, FACS
has devoted over 57 years to the field of oncology. He served as Director and Chief of Surgery at the Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, for 16 years, where he trained two generations of surgical oncologists. He initiated several pioneering programs including technology transfer, professional education divisions, computerized medical records, and rural cancer units. Under his leadership, the UICC International Cancer Congress held in New Delhi in 1994 became a landmark event that significantly advanced oncology in India. His distinguished honors include the Padma Bhushan (1981), Mucio Athayde International Prize of UICC (1998), Harvard Medical International Award for Oncology (2003), and the Dhanvantari Award (2007).
