Praful Desai, MS, FRCS, FACS has devoted over 57 years to the field of oncology. He served as Director and Chief of Surgery at the Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, for 16 years, where he trained two generations of surgical oncologists. He initiated several pioneering programs including technology transfer, professional education divisions, computerized medical records, and rural cancer units. Under his leadership, the UICC International Cancer Congress held in New Delhi in 1994 became a landmark event that significantly advanced oncology in India. His distinguished honors include the Padma Bhushan (1981), Mucio Athayde International Prize of UICC (1998), Harvard Medical International Award for Oncology (2003), and the Dhanvantari Award (2007).

Ratna Parikh

Ratna Parikh, MS, FACS, FAIS graduated in surgery from Grant Medical College and JJ Hospital, Mumbai, and has six years of teaching experience at BYL Nair Hospital. She trained and worked in surgical oncology under Dr Praful Desai for 18 years and visited leading cancer centers including MD Anderson and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centers, USA. She is the coordinating editor of Practical Clinical Oncology and has contributed several chapters to the book. She has numerous national and international publications and presentations and was elected Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2012. She is currently a consultant at Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi and Breach Candy Hospitals, Mumbai.
