The edition looks at the principles and techniques involved in the production and marketing of high quality seeds in a systematic manner. It contains up-to-date information on the development of the seed industry in India, the principles and techniques of seed drying, seed processing, seed storage, seed testing, and seed legislation. Several important new additions have been made to this edition: seed production; technology of crops, such as sugger cane, smaller forage crops, safflower, etc. The hybrid seed production technology that is now available for many new crops has also been included.
Rattan Lal Agrawal received his B.Sc. (Ag.) and M.Sc. (Ag.) degrees in 1962 and 1964, respectively, from Agra University (Government Agricultural College, Kanpur), and his doctorate from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, in 1969. He visited the USA as an AID participant in 1971 for specialized training in seed testing and storage.
He began his career in the field of "Seeds" at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, where he served in various capacities: Assistant Professor-cum-Assistant Director of Seed Production (1968-1973), Associate Professor/Senior Research Officer (Seed Testing) (1973-1986), and Professor, a position he continues to hold since 1986. Additionally, he served as Deputy Director General (Genetic Improvement and Seeds) at the U.P. Council of Agricultural Research for five years (1990-1995).
Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in teaching, research, and training programs related to Seed Improvement, Seed Production, Seed Testing, Seed Quality Control, and the preparation of Seed Plans. He has authored four books, a research bulletin, and numerous research papers on various topics related to seeds.
Agrawal has also made significant contributions as an author of standard agricultural books in Hindi. He published two books, both of which won the ICAR's Dr. Rajendra Prasad Puraskar—first prize in 1974-75 and second prize in 1977-78.
