The chapters in the book have been modified from the traditional organism-based teaching to system-based teaching. The uniqueness of the book is in the clinical case-based exercises and student activities after each practical to assess their learning and practical knowledge. The text is presented in a simple and lucid manner. The text is illustrated with eight colour plates containing 50 figures, computer-drawn figures and photomicrographs. These make the book colourful and the readers can have a better understanding. It will continue to serve as an ideal practical workbook for all MBBS and BDS students.

Dr. D R Arora is a distinguished microbiologist with more than 45 years of teaching experience in microbiology. He has served as the Head of the Department of Microbiology at various prestigious institutions, including Maharaja Agrasen Medical College and SGT University in Haryana. Dr. Arora has also played a key role in medical accreditation as a Lead Assessor for NABL and Principal Assessor for NABH.
He has authored 12 textbooks and published over 150 research articles in national and international journals. His research on Klebsiella pneumoniae and malaria parasites has been recognized globally, with citations in World Health Organization (WHO) reports and prominent microbiology texts. Dr. Arora's significant contributions to research earned him the Smt. Kunti Mehrotra Award in 1983. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences in 1985 and received a WHO fellowship for HIV/AIDS research. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists in 2023.
Bharti Arora, MD, is Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, Maharaja Agrasen Medical College, Agroha, Hisar. She has over 20 years of experience in teaching medical students and has worked across all fields of microbiology. She has completed fellowships at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Chandigarh. She has published numerous research articles in reputed national and international journals. She is a life member of the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists and is an empanelled Technical Assessor with the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), Gurugram.
