Dr. Gurmel Singh, Director, CSWCRTI, Dehradun, has over three decades of experience in soil and water conservation, watershed management, and dry farming. He also served for three years as Assistant Commissioner in the Ministry of Agriculture and has led the preparation of several model watershed management projects for various states in India. He received specialized training in soil and water conservation in the USA and Egypt, represented India twice at FAO Expert Consultations, and served for five years with the World Bank, assisting the Sokoto Agricultural and Rural Development Authority, Nigeria. Dr. Gurmel Singh, along with Mr. C. Venkataramanan and Mr. G. Sastry, received the Dr. P. B. Sarkar Endowment Prize (1980–83) for outstanding contributions to soil and water conservation.
