BN Chakravarty

B N Chakravarty, MO (Cal), FRCOG (London), DSc (hon), is a pioneering figure in assisted reproductive medicine (ART) in India and is often hailed as the ‘teacher of teachers’ for training numerous ART specialists. He began his career as a gynecologist and obstetrician and gained international recognition as a reconstructive surgeon in cervicovaginal atresia. He has published 84 papers in international journals and delivered over 75 lectures at global conferences. He has authored important chapters in various books on infertility and reproductive medicine and was awarded an honorary DSc by the University of North Bengal for his contributions to medical science. He serves as Director of the Institute of Reproductive Medicine, Kolkata, where his team delivered the second test-tube baby in India in 1986. He is also the convener of the fellowship course in reproductive medicine under the National Board, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, with 23 doctors having completed the FNB examination under his guidance. He has chaired the ICMR Committee for formulating national guidelines for the regulation, supervision, and accreditation of ART centers in India and continues to focus on research in implantation and unresolved factors affecting conception.
