S. M. Sengupta (MSc, 1954; DSc, 1967, University of Calcutta) conducted postdoctoral research in sedimentology at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, and Uppsala University, Sweden. He began his professional career as a Geophysicist with the Standard-Vacuum Oil Company, working in the Bengal Basin during the 1950s. Later, he served on the faculties of the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, as Professor of Geology. He retired from IIT Kharagpur as Professor and Head of the Department of Geology and Geophysics. After retirement, he continued his research as a Senior Scientist at the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). Prof. Sengupta is widely recognized for his significant contributions to sedimentology.
