In recent years, the way in which people view video has undergone massive changes, including the explosion in user-generated online video content and the increasing prevalence of mobile devices. As a result, there is a continuing need to optimize existing formats in order to minimize bandwidth while maintaining quality across a range of devices, and at the same time to develop new technologies that can meet consumer demand for novel types of video display such as 3D.
This book, which is relevant for students, researchers and developers, discusses existing coding standards and also covers a selection of advances in video coding techniques, including rate control, scalable video coding, rate distortion analysis, HVEC lossless compression and algorithm design. Although there will be considerable emphasis on video coding for multimedia/Internet applications, the book will also focus on the use of video coding for image acquisition in several specialist areas, e.g. spectral measurement/imagery of plant material, digital restoration of historical manuscripts, and characterization of porous materials.
