This book is envisioned to cover the fundamentals of medicinal chemistry. The third edition of this book is useful to seasonal medicinal chemists as well as to chemists entering academic or industrial laboratories. It provides a hands-on overview of the drug discovery process. This edition differs from the previous two editions by having been updated to reflect developments in the past 10 years. This volume encompasses 20 chapters. Chapters 1 to 7 discuss various fundamentals of medicinal chemistry, including receptors, physicochemical properties of drug molecule, prodrug concept.

Each chapter includes a brief introduction, chemical classification with examples, trade name, structure with IUPAC name, synthesis for selected drug molecules, mechanism of action and uses, and metabolism, etc. This volume covers the drugs acting on ANS, CNS, NSAID, cholinergic, adrenergic and including prostaglandins at the end.

K Ilango, MPharm, PhD, FIC, is currently Professor and Principal at Tagore College of Pharmacy, Chennai. He holds degrees from the Department of Pharmacy, Annamalai University, Chidambaram, and the Birla Institute of Science and Technology (BITS), Pilani, Rajasthan, and earned his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai. With 32 years of teaching experience and over a decade in research, he specializes in Medicinal Chemistry and Phytochemistry. He also has two years of pharmaceutical industry experience as a production chemist. Dr. Ilango has made substantial contributions to the field, with more than 250 scientific publications in national and international journals and several Indian patents. He has authored books in pharmaceutical chemistry, including Textbook of Medicinal Chemistry, Volumes I and II and Medicinal Chemistry for Pharm D, further enriching the academic landscape. He is actively involved in various statutory bodies, reflecting his commitment to the advancement of pharmaceutical education and research.

She completed her graduation at Periyar College of Pharmaceutical Sciences for Girls, Trichy, and studied at the College of Pharmacy, Madras Medical College, Chennai. She earned her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Chennai. With 30 years of teaching experience and two years of pharmaceutical industry experience, Dr. Valentina has made significant contributions to pharmaceutical education and research.
