Speech and language technology encompasses a number of applications - artificial speech production, speech to text and text to speech translation, biometrics (speaker recognition and verification), and speech coding for telecommunications purposes. The field is an ever-evolving one, and new developments are emerging all the time.
This book describes some of the latest speech and language technology applications and frameworks, including the development of speech recognition and translation systems that support minority languages such as Portugese and Turkish, and a speech-to-speech system which runs on computers and certain mobile devices, and is capable of translating between English and a number of other languages. Other topics covered include training algorithms, noise reduction, speech recognition and hearing impairment (including implant design and visual speech recognition), and "wake-up word" technology for speech-activated computer commands.
