Finite element analysis is a way of identifying likely areas of failure and stress in prototypes and finished structures or products. Key applications include structural, thermal, electromagnetic and fluid flow analysis across a range of applications from mechanical and aeronautical engineering to medicine.
This book presents a number of chapters discussing recent applications and new trends for finite element analysis, including dentistry and the study of biomedical implants such as heart valves and femoral stems. Not only can such analysis be used to improve surgical practice, it can also be used to help design next-generation devices which can be given to patients who would formerly have been considered unsuitable.
Further chapters in the book will focus on specific topics relating to the classical applications of finite element analysis in engineering. Examples include manufacture of thin-wall parts and sandwich panels; modeling of stresses in cylindrical pressure vessels; modeling of residual stress in alloys; and fault investigation in induction motors.
