Diagnosis, treatment and management of endocrine disorders is a challenge that faces countries at all stages of development. This challenge is especially serious, given the increasing prevalence of obesity throughout the world and the well-established link between obesity and endocrine diseases like type 2 diabetes. Ultimately, it is hoped that chronic endocrine disorders can be rendered curable by new developments in the field.
This book is intended partly as a reference work covering specific topics in basic and clinical endocrinology, such as the role the endocrine system plays in pregnancy and how it responds to stress. It will also deal with contemporary challenges (including the development of suitable animal research models) and examples of cutting edge corticosteroid therapies.
Specific diseases dealt with in this book include pituitary and thyroid tumors, insulinoma, obesity, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal disorders, acromegaly, gigantism and diabetic complications affecting the liver.
