Data mining is a vast topic; it describes methods of analysing large quantities of data using combinations of tools drawn from statistics, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and database systems. "Data Mining" aims to inform readers both of the principles of data mining in order to equip them for their own data mining practices, but also to demonstrate some frontier applications of data mining. The book is divided into five broad topical areas. The first section considers recent advances in data mining and knowledge discovery, and covers such topics as data mining and neural networks and BotNet detection. The second section discusses data mining in engineering and medicine, such as in the discovery of fragrance biosynthesis genes in orchids. The third considers knowledge-oriented approaches, for example in industrial applications. The fourth section, finally, considers new fundamental technologies in fields such as ubiquitous healthcare, and for applications such as the improvement of e-learning in higher education.
