The study of conservation biology encompasses several disciplines from the strictly scientific (for example genetics and ecology) to the social. It attempts to increase our understanding of the relationship between human activities and biodiversity, and hence to find out how real-world problems such as deforestation and species extinction can be addressed.
This chapters in this book illustrate the problems faced by conservationists attempting to halt the decline in the earths biodiversity. Subjects discussed include an evaluation of the success of protected area management schemes in the Levant area, the pros and cons of manipulating sex ratios in endangered species populations, the role and effectiveness of religion in achieving conservation goals, and the impact of conservation schemes on the local economy in Tanzania.
