Since the beginnings of modern biotechnology in the 1970s, the sector has expanded over the years and biotechnology now has a number of applications in fields as diverse as agriculture, waste management/recycling and the production of drugs, polymers, fuels and biological weapons. Today, much research is being done to push back the frontiers of biotechnology and discover novel applications or improve existing ones.
