This is the first of two volumes on the subject of biometrics.
Perhaps the best-known forms of biometrics are forensic fingerprinting and DNA analysis, but this technology has recently been extended to include the human eye, voice, facial expressions, brain or heart signals, and even the way that someone enters keystrokes on a keyboard. In addition to its well-established use in forensics, it is now being used as an integral component of passports and/or ID cards and there are several other emerging applications for biometrics.
These books will provide overviews of the various types of biometric techniques now in use and in addition to this, a number of chapters will discuss the work being done to improve fingerprint recognition and matching, and to detect attempts at spoofing.
Recent and emerging applications in biometrics will also be discussed, such as the use of iris recognition in mobile devices or for the detection of cholesterol, and facial recognition for biometric data collection in uncontrolled scenarios.
We believe that this book will be a valuable source of insight for students, researchers and practitioners in forensic science, computer security and any other field where biometrics has a current or potential application.
