The textbook focuses on the fundamentals of pharmacognosy, classification of crude drugs, their identification, evaluation, marine drugs, tissue culture techniques, phytochemicals present in the drugs and their medicinal properties. The textbook will help the undergraduate and postgraduate students of pharmacognosy to understand: techniques in cultivation and production of crude drugs crude drugs,their uses and chemical nature evaluation technique for herbal drugs microscopic and morphological evaluation of crude drugs. This textbook will also serve as a valuable information source for MPharm students as well as undergraduate/postgraduate students of courses in alternative systems of medicine.
A. N. Kalla, M.Pharm., PhD, is a former Professor and Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Haryana. He has also served as Director, Herbal Drugs Research, ISF College of Pharmacy, Moga, Punjab, and as Director-Principal, Sri Sai College of Pharmacy, Badhani, Pathankot, Punjab. He has over four decades of experience teaching pharmacognosy to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as allied subjects in pharmaceutical sciences.
During his academic and research career, Dr. Kalla has supervised approximately 65 M.Pharm. theses and seven PhD scholars. He has conducted and coordinated UGC- and AICTE-sponsored research projects and organized AICTE- and DST-sponsored scientific conventions. He has more than 75 publications to his credit in reputed national and international journals and serves as a reviewer for several national and international journals.
He is the Vice President of the Society of Pharmacognosy (India), North Region. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 from the Society of Pharmacognosy in recognition of his outstanding contributions to science and excellence in teaching and research in pharmacognosy and phytochemistry. He has also served as an expert member of AICTE and PCI inspection teams, as a member of NBA committees, as a member of university academic councils, and as an examiner for several universities.
