VMD Namboodiri graduated in modern medicine from the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. He took his MD (psychiatry) from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He took his MA in psychology from the Kerala University securing first rank in the examination. He joined Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical Mission Hospital (later converted as MOSC Medical College and Hospital), Kolenchery, Kerala, and served as the Head, Department of Psychiatry, MOSC Medical College and Hospital. He is now serving as a consultant psychiatrist at Sevana Hospital, Pattambi, Kerala. Dr Namboodiri has authored A Concise Textbook of Psychiatry, 3/e and edited and coauthored A Guide to Clinical Psychiatry, Clinical Methods in Psychiatry and Perspectives on Mind.
