General Topology has occupied a central place in the Post Graduate programme for Mathematics of Indian Universities and in final year under graduate programme in USA and Europe. This textbook presents a first course on general topology. The fundamental concepts of topology have been developed systematically through theorems, lemmas, propositions and definitions, thereby providing a lucid, compact, comprehensive and precise approach to the subject.
The authors strongly believe and it is universally accepted that the basic techniques and results of topology are indispensable for the growth of most areas of pure and applied mathematics. Beginning with the preliminaries and historical notes (sets and functions and related topics), the text moves on to metric spaces, which are discussed in detail. Next, the focus shifts to topological spaces, compactness and connectedness. After that, separation axioms are taken up. Then additional matter on metric spaces have been provided. Finally, homotopy and the fundamental group have been described. Moore-smith convergence etc, have not been included since those topics are not taught in the first course. In the appendices the concept of topological vector spaces and simplicial complexes have been discussed. This book also contains adequate number of examples, counter-examples and exercises to aid students to gain experience in problem solving. The authors from their experience in teaching the course for numerous years, strongly feel that this book will be most suitable for the course.
Sudarsan Nanda is the Research Chair at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar. He was Professor at IIT Kharagpur and the Vice-Chancellor at North Orissa University. Prof. Nanda is a Ph.D and D.Sc, Fellow of Institute of Mathematics and Applications (UK), former Associate of ICTP, Trieste, Italy. He is a member of Editorial Board of Journal of Fuzzy Mathematics and many other Journal & received Distinguished teacher award. Prof. Nanda published 200 research papers in reputed Journals, 50 in reputed conferences, guided 18 Ph.D Students and authored /Co-authored 18 Books. Sribatsa Nanda was professor at National Institute of Technology, Raurkela.he obtained Ph.D from Queen`s University, Kingston (Canada) in 1969 and had been a visiting Professor at the University of Calgary(Canada)during 1975-1976 and the Memorial University, Newfoundland (Canada) during 1976-77. He has had a distinguished academic record and was an excellent teacher. He published several research papers in reputed Journals, guided many Doctorial students and also co- authored a book on Algebraic Topology.
