The subject of flood control and drainage engineering is of considerable interest to civil engineers, agricultural engineers, architects and town planners, civil authorities, and government/private organizations, responsible for design of flood protection structures/mitigation measures for disaster management. This book, although intended for wide range of users as mentioned above, is primarily directed as a course material on the subject for students of civil engineering with specialization in water resources, hydraulic, or environmental engineering at the final year undergraduate level and the postgraduate level.
This edition is thoroughly revised to accommodate recent developments in the area of remote-sensing, information technology and GIS technology to deal with the problem of flood forecasting, flood plain prioritization and flood hazard zoning. Apart from these, additions have been made to deal with design of engineering measures for flood control, drainage improvement specially with regard to salinity and coastal aquifer management from the ingress of sea water. Design of engineering measures for flood requires knowledge of hydrology to estimate flood and to apply flood routing techniques, reservoir planning, design and operation, theoretical background of river engineering, tidal hydraulics, drainage and reclamation engineering along with application of remote sensing and GIS technology for the design of channel improvement works. Keeping the above requirement in mind the contents have been covered in thirteen chapters with solved design problems and case studies so as to make it application oriented and useful to the student community. The author, now retired, served as Professor and Head of the Civil Engineering at the Department at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. He also served the Kolkata Port Trust as Chief Hydraulic Engineer, on deputation from IIT, Kharagpur.
