It lays emphasis on providing a consistent and readable format for a clear understanding of the concise description of various aspects of the science of crude drugs. The traditional herbal drugs are discussed to provide a link among current findings. It discusses the biological sources, chemical constituents and therapeutic efficacies of crude drugs, basic principles involved in the traditional systems of medicine, Ayurvedic formulations, health, food, herbal formulations, herbal cosmetics and phytochemical investigation of drugs.
The arrangement of the subject matter is based on the pharmacological activities of the herbal drugs. Biological sources, distribution, cultivation, chemical constituents, and therapeutic uses of the herbal drugs are discussed throughout the book.
Separate chapters on the classification of drugs, quality control of crude drugs, isolation, identification tests, therapeutic activities and pharmaceutical applications of herbal drug constituents are included to develop students' familiarity. Following the abovementioned properties, figures of the crude drugs and structural formulae of important chemical constituents of each herbal drug are discussed.
Mohammed Ali PhD is former Dean and Acting Vice Chancellor, Faculty of Pharmacy, Jamia Hamdard,New Delhi.He has served as Lecturer,Department of Chemistry,Jamia Millia Islamia,New Delhi (1977–1980),and Hamdard College of Pharmacy, University of Delhi (1980–1982), as Scientist, Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR), Jammu Tawi (1982–1990), as Associate Professor and Professor, Faculty of Pharmacy,Hamdard University,New Delhi (1990–2012).He has also served as Head,Department of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry,Faculty of Pharmacy,Hamdard University,New Delhi. He has more than 50 years of experience in teaching and research. His fields of research are natural products,medicinal chemistry and phytochemistry.He has published 776 research papers in national and international journals; presented 205 research papers at national and international conferences and symposiums; authored 17 research books and textbooks; and contributed chapters in seven international books.
